Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine practiced in India for more than 5000 years. “Ayurveda” is a Sanskrit word comprised of two words, 'Ayu' meaning life and 'veda' meaning science or knowledge. Thus Ayurveda is science or knowledge of life.

Ayurveda is a science of body, mind and spirit. It teaches the way to healthy living by staying in harmony with the universe. It teaches how to choose a healthy diet and lifestyle according to the seasons and body types. Following the suggested guidelines help maintain the optimum physical health (body) and then it becomes an abode for healthy mind and spirit.

Ayurveda provides extensive knowledge on the properties of differnt foods, herbs, spices, etc. and their effects on our body physically, mentally and emotionally. When the guidelines of Ayurveda are abandoned, disharmony and illhealth sets in. Ayurveda provides extensicve knowledge on the use of herbs, various treatment methods and protocols to regain the state of health and harmony.

The present medical approach trains the physicians to look at people as livers or lungs or colons or the physicians learns to ignore and neglect the wholeness of a person. Unlike this, Ayurveda takes a holistic approach. It considers the individual identity of a person to design an individual program to bring back the heatlh. The individual identity or “Prakuti#8221; is determined by the person's look, temperament, desires, pulse, etc. This “Prakruti#8221; can be vatta, pitta, kapha or their multiple combinations. Then the extent of the tissue damage is determined and the necessary treatment plan is implemented.

Besides taking care of the physical body, Ayurveda teaches how to achieve and maintain a healthy mind and spirit and then ascend them to higher levels. It has given the world the various forms of yoga exercises, breathing techniques and meditation techniques. All of these are to help achieve better physical health as well as ease the energy flow through various chakras, the energy centers of the body.

Ayurveda, thus is the science, the unexhausting sea of knowledge, to keep you healhty and furthermore, to take one to the highest level of existence.
